Motorway vignette
Portugal has no motorway vignette — there is nothing to buy, so any website offering a "Portuguese vignette" is selling something that does not exist. Portuguese motorways are tolled instead: some are conventional with ticket booths, others (the former SCUT roads) are electronic-only with no barriers, where cameras read your number plate. Important: the real task before driving in Portugal is arranging electronic-toll payment in advance — see the toll section.
Electronic tolls (foreign cars)
This is the big Portugal trap: on barrier-free electronic motorways (the former SCUT roads) there is nowhere to pay at the roadside — no booths at all. A foreign-plated car must pre-register a payment method via the official Portugal Tolls portal (portugaltolls.com) before driving: EasyToll (links a payment card to your number plate, valid 30 days), TollCard (prepaid, EUR 5–40) or Via Verde Visitors (a transponder). If you skip this, a fine for unpaid tolls arrives by post. Important: never enter an ex-SCUT road without pre-registering, and use only the official channels portugaltolls.com or Via Verde — many reseller sites add extra fees.

Third-party motor liability insurance is compulsory for every vehicle registered in Portugal. The state insurance supervisor is ASF (Autoridade de Supervisão de Seguros); the Fundo de Garantia Automóvel (FGA, part of ASF) compensates victims of accidents caused by uninsured or unidentified vehicles.
