Motorway e-vignette
You must have a valid e-vignette before entering a Slovak motorway; it is tied to your licence plate. Types: 10-day, 30-day and 365-day (2026 prices unchanged from 2025 — see the official price list). It is valid immediately after purchase — unlike in Austria there is no activation delay — and the start date can be set up to 60 days ahead. Buy only at eznamka.sk, the sole official sales channel; reseller sites often appear above it in search results and charge markups, and double-check your plate number and country of registration when purchasing. Driving without a vignette means a fine during NDS or police checks.

Slovakia has no separate section toll for cars — the vignette covers the entire tolled motorway network, and this official map shows which sections require it. Note that emyto.sk is the per-kilometre toll system for vehicles over 3.5 t only; it does not apply to cars.

Slovakia has no country-wide low-emission zone and no environmental sticker for cars — a visiting driver has nothing to buy. If a city ever introduces a zone, it would apply locally through road signage; there is no national portal today. Be wary of websites offering a Slovak emission badge — no such sticker exists, unlike the German green badge.

112 works everywhere in the EU. Slovakia also has direct numbers: 155 for ambulance, 158 for police, 150 for the fire service and 18300 for mountain rescue. After an accident with injuries you must call for help and stay at the scene.

STK is the mandatory roadworthiness inspection for cars registered in Slovakia. A new passenger car goes for its first inspection after 4 years, then every 2 years.

PZP third-party liability insurance is compulsory for every registered vehicle. The state portal slovensko.sk explains the owner's duty; the official guarantee fund and green-card bureau is SKP (skp.sk), which handles claims involving uninsured drivers and issues green cards.

There is no official state source for car servicing in Slovakia — routine maintenance and repairs are handled by brand dealerships or independent garages. For scheduled servicing, use your manufacturer's dealer locator or a trusted local garage.
Vehicle registration
Vehicle registration, re-registration and ownership transfers in Slovakia are handled by the police vehicle-registration office (dopravný inšpektorát). The state portal slovensko.sk explains the steps and the required documents.
